About the students

A unique way of learning!

A Specialist Post-16 Institution, providing bespoke learning programmes for young people in Torbay, Plymouth, Newton Abbot and Exeter with complex learning needs.

The aim of the Eat That Frog is to prepare young people for the next stage of their lives. Learners who would otherwise not be in employment, education, or training participate well in learning at Eat That Frog.

Our small groups, specialised instructors, 1:1 mentorship, and bespoke curriculum offer personalised support that larger institutions cannot.

Catchment

We are based in the South West, with centres across South Devon.

We have post-16 centres in Paignton, Plymouth, Newton Abbot, and Exeter, as well as an adult training and Kings Trust centre in Torquay.

Curriculum

We offer bespoke curriculums built around each learner, with a focus on their chosen destination.

Destination options are:

  • Employment
  • Supported Internship
  • Apprenticeship
  • College
  • Volunteering

Our bespoke curriculums are made up of our ‘Core Curriculum’, which is included in every learners package. As well as choice of ‘Vocational Subjects’ and ‘Destinations’.

Every bespoke curriculum includes learners specific EHCP outcome requirements and follows the four, preparing for adulthood pathways:

  • Employment
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Community Inclusion
  • Independent Living

Our study programmes are for young people who are aged 16-18. (If you are 19+ and have an EHCP, you are funded as a 16-18 Study Programme Learner.)

We work closely with local authorities and learners with EHCPs to agree a bespoke learning package for each student.

Vocational Qualifications

Every post-16 learner will be offered OCN and City & Guilds Entry Level to Level 2 vocational qualifications within a choice of subjects. These are chosen with the learners.

Subject Choices are

  • Employability, Business, Catering, Hospitality, Creative and Digital Media
  • Functional skills in maths and English
  • GCSEs in maths and English

Clear destination options

The chosen vocational qualifications form part of the individual curriculum plan. The rest of their curriculum is contingent on their destination choices.

Bespoke curriculum

Once the vocational qualifications and destination are chosen, a bespoke curriculum for each learner is formed. This includes maths and English and also takes into account their EHCP outcomes.

Specialist facilities

Our person-centred ethos and small, dedicated centres make us an ideal choice for young people who need help to build confidence and progress into adulthood.

What makes us really special is the effort we put into helping learners with social skills and coping mechanisms - helping reduce anxiety levels, manage social  interactions and integrate into small groups. Our most recent Ofsted report praised our 'caring' and 'positive' learning environment, saying "Learners’ self-confidence and personal responsibility for their progress develop well during their time at college. Their improved self-awareness and ability to articulate their feelings reduce levels of personal anxiety. Effective support helps learners develop the resilience needed to overcome the learning challenges they may face. As a result, learners become more able to manage situations that they previously found very difficult and are positive about their future."

We have a strong focus on employability, preparing students for the challenges of work in their chosen area, e.g. via a Traineeship / Supported Internship / Apprenticeship, or by applying for Further Education. Our Work & Learning Coaches support learners with advice and guidance about suitable progression routes, helping arrange internal and external work experience placements.

Other information

We work closely with The King’s Trust and other local providers, businesses and community groups to provide fun extra activities and days out through the summer holidays and as enrichment to our study programmes.

Learners also take part in fundraising and community projects throughout the year to foster a sense of ‘belonging’, but also to add value to all of our educational activities by encouraging 'real world' experiences, interactions and achievements.
