Have you ever had to think about your approach to a learner who brings their toy Thomas the Tank Engine into college or responds really well to nursery rhymes or children’s stories? If this has caused a dilemma for you or your team, then this session aims to provide an opportunity to discuss why this is and what we can do to be clearer in our approach around what is or isn’t age appropriate and why it matters.
This session will enable practitioners to explore the concept of ‘age appropriacy’ in the context of providing educational opportunities to learners with a complex need or PMLD label.
By the end of the session, you should have a clear understanding of how you can develop a person centred approach in your provision around age appropriacy and be confident to meet learners’ needs. A framework for good practice developed with practitioners will be shared during the session.
Who is it for?
Managers, teachers, learning support assistants, therapists who work with learners with a complex needs or PMLD label.
Training content
This professional discourse session will cover the challenges that arise when discussing ‘age appropriacy’ in post-16 education for learners with at complex needs or PMLD label and reflect on the reasons for this.
It will include opportunities to consider why being ‘age appropriate’ matters and will enhance the ability of staff teams to work together in developing a shared understanding based on underpinning values and sound pedagogy.
The session includes case studies from providers and opportunities to share challenges and good practice.
A framework for good practice will support providers to continue this discussion in their organisations and be confident that they can provide a rationale for their strategy and practice around age appropriacy.
